7th Biennial Conference – 2017

7th Art in Early Childhood Conference

What is Art For?
15-18 April 2017 | Paro, Bhutan

The 7th International Art in Early Childhood Conference will be held at the Paro College of Education, Royal University of Bhutan. Bhutan provides a unique and stunning venue for a conference. Bhutan is a small democratic kingdom of about one million people set high in the Himalayan Mountains. It is often called the ‘last Shangri-La’ and is known worldwide for its policy of Gross National Happiness (GNH). In Bhutan, the arts, Buddhism and daily life are intertwined.

The organizing committee extends a very warm invitation to the conference. We believe our conference programme will challenge and extend your professional growth as an early childhood educator as well as arm you with new perspectives and skill sets in the arts.

Conference Theme:

The conference theme asks the question ‘WHAT IS ART FOR?’ particularly in relation to young children. To consider this question more broadly and move beyond the more obvious specific curriculum outcomes we might begin by considering how others have answered at a more global level. We would like this conference to be sensitive to the social, cultural, environmental and political contexts of Bhutan. Underpinning everything that happens in Bhutan is the concept of GNH.

There are four pillars to GNH and nine domains. The four main pillars of GNH are:
1. Equitable and equal socio-economic development
2. Preservation and promotion of cultural and spiritual heritage
3. Conservation of environment and
4. Good governance which are interwoven, complementary, and consistent.

These pillars embody national and local values, aesthetics, and spiritual traditions. http://www.tourism.gov.bt/about-bhutan/the-four-main-pillars
If we look at the four pillars of GNH through the lens of the conference theme, ‘What is art for?’, several interesting and challenging topics emerge that are worthy sub themes for this conference.
